Welcome to Behind the Scenes.” This monthly, online column provides members with a backstage pass to see what CAMFT is doing to serve our members and how we are working to ensure that the interests of LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees are being served.

December, 2014

  • Board and Staff participated in 11 meetings with Access Coalition, MFT Leadership Collaborative, Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD) “Workforce Education & Training (WET) Advisory Committee,” California Hospital Association Irregulars, Peace Officer Training Workgroup, Department of Health Care Services Medi-Cal Managed Care Advisory Group, Department of Health Care Services Behavioral Health Treatment Stakeholders, and Consortiums in Los Angeles, Central Coast, Inland Empire, and Central Valley. It is critical for CAMFT to have a place at the table with other mental health professionals and regulatory bodies. These meetings will always be a high priority.
  • CAMFT Legal Staff responded to 1443 calls from members with questions on legal, ethical and licensure issues. Access to this expert, legal guidance is one of the most beneficial and popular member benefits.
  • Over 15,300 people visited the CounselingCalifornia.com website with 12,836 of those being unique visitors. There were hits to 4,170 different therapist profiles and 29,551 total page views. The CounselingCalifornia.com marketing tool is available to all members for the purpose of promoting services to the public.
  • CAMFT secured media placements on 10 television news segments, 4 radio news talk shows, and numerous print articles and online news articles. Print and television interviews featuring LMFTs educate potential clients about the services and scope of knowledge of LMFTs.
  • CAMFT staff submitted advocacy letters to:
    • Shelley Rouillard, Director of the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) to request the DMHC enforce laws requiring reimbursement for telehealth services;
    • Senator Richard Lara thanking him for ordering an audit of Medi-Cal Directories;
    • Various Managed Health Care plans to remind each to recognize MFT Registered Interns as qualified providers of Medi-Cal mental health services;
    • Toby Douglas, Director of the Department of Health Care Services requesting Medi-Cal provider manuals with rates information be made available;
    • Congressman Sam Farr thanking him for his efforts in securing Committee Report language in the House of Representatives Military Construction and Veterans Appropriations bill on the hiring of LMFTs in the VA that was included in the Omnibus bill funding the Federal government for Fiscal year 2015.

CAMFT consistently interacts with key legislators, agencies and other organizations to reinforce how proposed legislation may be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s commitment to members.

  • Staff attended 1 fundraiser for Assemblymember Richard Pan. CAMFT consistently interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s commitment to members.
  • Staff made Law & Ethics presentations at 1 agency: Sanctuary Centers of Santa Barbara. The law and ethics seminar is a valuable training tool that gets consistently positive response from MFTs and other participants
  • Staff made presentations at 2 schools: National University in Los Angeles and San Bernardino. Presentations to schools are an effective way to engage the next generation of CAMFT members.
  • The CAMFT Finance and Nominating Committees met. If you are interested in serving on a Committee in 2015-2016, please send a cover letter indicating the committee in which you are interested along with your resume to CAMFT at 7901 Raytheon Road, San Diego, CA 92111. Committee appointments are made by the President of the Board of Directors.
  • The CAMFT Board of Directors met December 6-7 in Los Angeles. View highlights from the Board of Directors meeting. The Board hosted a reception for Los Angeles Chapter board members. The Board will meet again March 13-14, 2015 in Washington, D.C.
