Welcome to Behind the Scenes.” This monthly, online column provides members with a backstage pass to see what CAMFT is doing to serve our members and how we are working to ensure that the interests of LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees are being served.

CAMFT Staff participated in 8 meetings with BBS Supervision Committee, BBS Policy & Advocacy Committee, BBS Executive Officer, CA Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Steinberg Institute, Department of Health Care Services’ Stakeholder Advisory Committee, Department of Health Care Services’ DMS-ODS Stakeholders, and Department of Managed Health Care Consumer Provider Plan Agency. It is critical for CAMFT to have a place at the table with other mental health professionals and regulatory bodies. These meetings will always be a high priority.

CAMFT Legal Staff responded to 2116 calls from members with questions on legal, ethical and licensure issues. Access to this expert, legal guidance is one of the most beneficial and popular member benefits.

CAMFT Staff submitted advocacy letters to:

  • US Representatives Lucille Roybal-Allard, Judy Chu, Alan Lowenthal and Doris Matsui thanking each for co-sponsoring the Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2015 (HR 2759)
  • US Representatives Chris Gibson and Mike Thompson thanking each for introducing the Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2015 (HR 2759)
  • US Representative Ted Lieu in support of the Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act (HR 2450)

CAMFT consistently interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation, regulation, or other actions may be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s commitment to members.

CAMFT Staff, Board and lobbyists attended 1 reception for the Republican Delegation, which included US Representatives Kevin McCarthy, Paul Cook, David Valadao, Ed Royce, and Ken Calvert. The goal of the CAMFT PAC is to ensure that Marriage and Family Therapist-friendly candidates and incumbents from both political parties get elected to the California legislature. We support candidates who have demonstrated an understanding and willingness to fight for the issues most important to Marriage and Family Therapists. Click here to donate to the CAMFT PAC!

CAMFT Staff were present at the following 2 professional exhibits to promote CAMFT membership, CounselingCalifornia.com, and CAMFT’s Continuing Education Provider Approval Program: National Association of Social Workers and California Association of School Psychologists. CAMFT promotes its member services and benefits to other mental health practitioners as an additional professional resource.

CAMFT Staff presented Law and Ethics seminars at 1 agency and 3 chapters: Victor Community Services, and Santa Clara Valley, Orange County, and Southwest Riverside County Chapters. The law and ethics seminar is a valuable training tool that gets consistently positive response from MFTs and other participants.

CAMFT Board attended 1 school presentation: Business of Psychotherapy at San Francisco State University, given by 2015 CAMFT Educational Foundation Grant recipient Rajani Venkatraman Levis. The CAMFT Educational Foundation awards over $14,000 in scholarships and grants to marriage and family therapists and interns each year. Apply for an Educational Foundation scholarship or grant, or donate to the Educational Foundation.

CAMFT Staff and Board made presentations at 2 chapters, Santa Barbara and Marin County Chapters, and participated in 3 Chapter meetings, Redwood Empire, East Bay, and Los Angeles Chapters. Chapter meetings are a prime opportunity for CAMFT leadership and staff to hear directly from members and exchange ideas for serving members. Click here to connect with your local chapter.

The CAMFT Strategic Planning Committee held a retreat on October 9-11, 2015, in Huntington Beach. The Committee met with Board members and two Past President to review CAMFT’s Strategic Plan.
