Dear Members,

Congratulations to all our recent MFT graduates! Earning a master’s (or doctoral) degree is a substantial accomplishment, and I want to acknowledge all the effort that went into your education.

Here’s my quick advice for new MFT grads:

  • Celebrate your degree! You’ve worked hard to earn your degree, so I hope you get a chance to celebrate with family, friends, and acknowledge your success.
  • Register with BBS to get your Associate number ASAP. I’m sure most of you have done this already, but if you haven’t, do it immediately. You must register within 90 days of graduating to be able to count supervised hours you accrue at agencies between graduation and the receipt of your Associate number. CAMFT has been advocating to maintain this opportunity available for associates.
  • Get involved with a CAMFT chapter. Most chapters have networking opportunities for pre-licensed individuals. Many chapters are hosting job fairs for agencies in their area. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get your name out there and start to develop professional relationships that can help you in your future. If you’re thinking of moving to another part of the state, think about joining the chapter where you’d like to move to locate opportunities there.
  • Update your resume regularly. It is easy to forget what you’ve done if you don’t write it down. Adding to your resume on a quarterly basis makes sure that you don’t forget to list recent accomplishments. If you save it on Dropbox or in your email, you can easily access it to send to someone offering a new job opportunity.
  • Track your loans. Your six month grace period ends faster than you expect. Know when you are responsible for starting to pay back your student loans. If you can, set-up an automatic payment so you don’t forget (and you might get a small interest reduction for setting up automatic payments).
  • Keep reading CAMFT materials. CAMFT recently held its first Associate Job Fair at the Annual Conference in Garden Grove. It was a great success and we plan on doing this again at next year’s conference in Burlingame! We also promote chapter events, so you might find nearby chapters hosting regional job fairs.

I wish all of the 2018 MFT graduates the best as they continue on their journey to becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists!
