Have you ever wondered what the science of parenting reveals about the best way to help children thrive? Attachment research reveals that it’s not what happens but rather how we make sense of experiences and learn to show up fully for our kids that matters most in their development. Filled with fun exercises and discussions, this workshop invites you to help clients explore their parenting history and the practice of being present in ways that can enhance all their relationships.
Understanding this approach will allow therapists to:

Gender is a societal construct that is toxic and has negative emotional, physical, and/or psychological impact on people, especially those who fall outside of what is constructed as “normal.” Trans folx, specifically, folx of color, and more specifically Black trans folx are overly misdiagnosed with mental health issues because of the lack of cultural competency. In this presentation, we will deconstruct gender constructs through a trauma-informed lens so we can create safer spaces for folx who identify as trans and/or are exploring their trans identity while also learning how to identify and eradicate our own internalized biases.
We are the experts of our own experience. Gender is a construct, and we know that our differences are not based on sex/gender. We will learn the mental health risk factors and how to take space and make space.
The target audience for this workshop is Marriage and Family Therapists and Associate Marriage and Family Therapists.
Van Ethan Levy, AMFT, APCC, is a queer, AFAB (Assigned Female at Birth), NBPOC (Not Black Person of Color) who is non-binary and trans. Their pronouns are: Van, they/them. They are an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (102373) and an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (4564) passionate about bringing visibility to all intersections of one’s identity/identities and dedicated to social justice. Their goal is to create a safe space for folx to explore all aspects of themselves while learning to trust that their experience is valid and real. They use a multicultural, trauma-informed lens and bring together the different intersections of one’s identity/identities.
This course will explore mental health stakeholders’ apprehensive approach to understanding and handling the high needs and challenges confronting new immigrants to the United States, specifically within California. What are the practical ways of distributing mental health resources to these diverse populations within each clinician community? The main target is documented and undocumented adult immigrants, with all their cultural backgrounds, stigmas, and beliefs about mental health. The course will cover the emotional, relational, social, and legal impact of untreated immigrants who suffer and are in need of immediate mental health care and interventions.
The main goal of the workshop is to establish a new vision and clinical approach, from awareness to apprehensive interventions, to provide clinicians with different ways to get involved directly and indirectly given the current vulnerable state of access to mental health for new documented and undocumented immigrants.
Maher Sonbol, M.A., LMFT, is an adjunct professor at Hope International University who is certified as an anger management counselor and domestic violence advocate. He is a public speaker with a focus on the opportunities and challenges within multicultural communities. Maher is currently acquiring his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, aiming to incorporate his 25 years of experience within major multinational corporate organizations with his experiences in the mental health field. By traveling to 17 countries, Maher has had the opportunity to interact with many different cultures. He is married and a father to two amazing teenagers.
Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your fifth-grader sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. Do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? No — it’s just their developing brain calling the shots! In this workshop, Tina Payne Bryson demystifies the meltdowns and aggravation by explaining in a clear and practical way the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. Dr. Bryson uses stories and humor to introduce parents to 12 Whole-Brain strategies, including:
By applying these immediately practical strategies to everyday parenting, you can turn outbursts, arguments, and fears into opportunities to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth. The result? Kids who are happier, healthier, and more fully themselves.
During the first hour, CAMFT Staff Attorney Sara Jasper will describe key issues to address at the outset of treatment with an emphasis on the importance of identifying the client unit and setting up reasonable expectations within the client unit by discussing client goals and clarifying professional boundaries and competencies, key policies and procedures.
