Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD is an Adolescent Medicine physician specializing in the care of gender non-conforming children and transgender youth. Board certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Olson-Kennedy is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, and an attending physician at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. She has been providing medical intervention for transgender youth and young adults, including puberty suppression and gender affirming hormones, for the past sixteen years and is considered a national expert in this area. Dr. Olson-Kennedy is the Medical Director of The Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, the largest transgender youth clinic in the United States. Dr. Olson-Kennedy spearheads a robust research program aimed at understanding the impact of gender affirmation of trans and non-binary youth.

Aydin Olson-Kennedy (he/him) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has provided mental health care to transgender and non-binary communities for over fifteen years. His clinical work and pedagogy are informed by anti-oppressive critical theories addressing intersectionality, power, and oppression. Aydin is passionate about and specializes in working with parents, caregivers, and guardians of trans and non-binary children of all ages. His work centers around exploring the experiences and impact of gender dysphoria outside the diagnostic criteria of the DSM.

Workshop Description:

 Increasing numbers of gender non-conforming and transgender youth are presenting for care. This workshop will present a multidisciplinary care model to review the impact of gender dysphoria on adolescent development and available medical interventions. 

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the presentations of gender dysphoria among youth and young adults.
  • Describe at least one consideration when assessing for the initiation of medical intervention for those who desire a phenotypic gender transition.
  • Identify at least two gender-affirming treatments and interventions.
