California law generally requires health care practitioners to form therapist-patient relationships with individuals requesting emotional support dog documentation (e.g. letters, forms, etc.) at least 30 days prior to providing these individuals with the documentation.
SB 774, a law that went into effect last year, created an exception to the 30-day therapeutic relationship requirement for patients who are verified to be homeless.
For more information about this exception and the protocols for providing patients with emotional support dog documentation, please see the CAMFT article Emotional Support Animals, Service Animals, and Reasonable Accommodations by Bradley Muldrow, JD and CAMFT's Emotional Support Dog Documentation Checklist, available from our Sample Practice Forms page.
