MEDICARE: WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU BECOME LICENSED

Attention pre-licensees! Once you become licensed, you will become a Medicare eligible provider. That means that you must make a choice about whether to opt in or out of the Medicare system.

Be aware that you’ll also have a legal and ethical responsibility to be clear about your Medicare status, and to communicate it clearly to your patients. Failing to do so could lead to liability.

To opt in to Medicare, you’ll be required to provide proof that you meet the Medicare provider eligibility requirements, including the requirement that you have at least two years or 3,000 hours of POST-DEGREE clinically supervised experience. You can use either a form of signed BBS hours forms or a statement from the setting where you worked indicating that you have the required clinically supervised experience. Regardless of your choice to opt in or out, be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Medicare Corner.
