Providers who opt out of Medicare are considered opted of the Medicare system for all purposes and all settings.
If you think you may have opted out in error, you have 90 days from the date of submitting an initial opt-out affidavit to terminate your opt out status. You can do this by notifying your MAC of your intent to enroll in Medicare.
Remember, if you opt out, the opt out period lasts for two years. This means providers who opt out will not be able to change their Medicare status for two years. Therefore, CAMFT encourages providers to check in with their employers and their work settings and to consult with any insurance companies they may be credentialed with before opting out. Please notify CAMFT through our LEB hotline if you are a provider who opted out of Medicare and had your contracts with commercial plans cancelled as a result.
