I am honored to be nominated to serve as president-elect. I am asking for your vote so that I may serve you as our organization becomes increasingly engaged with members and chapters.
I began my CAMFT board service in 2010 after serving as president of the Santa Cruz chapter. I have learned, listened to members, and taken action to help strengthen CAMFT at both the local and state level. While participating on the executive board and committees, I have always tried to hold the needs of all members in mind. It has been invaluable to me to visit chapters throughout the state and attend CAMFT events over the years. In these meetings, I speak with those who are less outspoken yet hold important perspectives and concerns as well as with members who are outspoken and have different views than those of the board. I believe that this is the effort needed with upcoming bylaw changes. Bylaws are an excellent way to engage and hear from members. The board must actively educate members about the potential changes and then solicit the broadest range of opinions from our membership before there is a vote on the bylaws.
As chief financial officer, I have been directly involved in passing policies that increase fiscal responsibility to ensure that our dues are used wisely. I look forward to finding ways to enrich our members’ experience of CAMFT by the addition of supportive business services using some of our current reserves. I have worked diligently to increase PAC contributions and to communicate with our elected officials about the need to include MFTs as mental health service providers in both federal and state legislation. I will continue to support CAMFT being involved in any discussions of insurance reimbursement rates.
I will continue to be a strong advocate on the board for the safe and competent treatment of LGBTQIA2S+ folx. As a member of this population, I understand the harm done when CAMFT missteps. I will continue to support equity for all.
Historically, only a small percentage of CAMFT members are active in CAMFT. You, as a member, can serve on committees, run for board positions, join chapters, attend the annual conference/events, vote, respond to surveys about our profession, and use CAMFT’s online and legal services. I believe that when members are engaged, CAMFT is better, more responsive, and more effective. Please join me in the next few years by being involved. Member engagement will be one of my key focuses during my presidency.
Serving on the board has afforded me the opportunity to gain a deep understanding about the operations of our state organization, lobbying efforts, changing state and federal legislation, education and networking efforts, chapters, and prelicensed member interests. I am so grateful for the connections I have gained in these many years of working on committees and meeting with members, staff, legislators, fellow board, and chapter leaders. I look forward to putting this on-the-job training to work by serving you as president.
