SAN DIEGO, Oct. 11, 2024 —The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), California’s trusted voice for mental health care representing over 38,000 Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), urges California voters to support Proposition 3 on the November ballot – a long overdue constitutional amendment to enshrine marriage equality across the state.

Our patients deserve to live and thrive as their authentic selves, both personally and under the law – which means having full and equal access to civil rights, including the right to marry. Families come in many beautiful forms; as mental health professionals, we are committed to supporting and celebrating this diversity. Our dedication to fostering an inclusive and accepting environment reflects our belief in the fundamental principle that everyone deserves to have their relationships respected and valued.

As therapists, CAMFT’s members understand how acutely public discourse can affect mental health. With threats to LGBTQPIA2S+ rights intensifying both here in California and around the country, CAMFT reaffirms our belief in the dignity and rights of LGBTQPIA2S+ individuals, including transgender and gender-expansive individuals.

While marriage equality has been the law of the land since Obergefell v. Hodges, California’s state constitution retains outdated language banning same-sex marriage, a relic of 2008’s Proposition 8. It is urgent that California removes this language and permanently protects the right to marriage at the state level.
