A Microdose of Ethics:  Legal & Ethical Considerations for Psychedelic and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

9:00 am - 12:00 pm (3 CE hours)

It would not be hyperbole to state that we are on the precipice of a potential paradigm shift in the treatment of some mental health conditions. While classic psychedelics such as MDMA and psilocybin remain listed as Schedule 1 substances by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, that may change in the coming year, which could usher in an era of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. While we wait for updates from ongoing clinical trials, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is currently being provided in a variety of settings. This workshop will guide attendees through the legal and ethical considerations when providing ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and what principles may apply to psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in the future.

 Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:·

  • Analyze different ways in which risk may fluctuate across setting types when providing ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.
  • Identify key sections of the CAMFT Code of Ethics applicable to psychedelic- and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.
  • Describe the current legal differences between providing psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy versus ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.

What Every Therapist Needs to  Know About Artificial Intelligence

1:30 pm - 4:30 pm (3 CE hours)

Technology has significantly shaped the way in which we interact with each other, both in personal settings as well as professional ones. One particular form of technology - Artificial Intelligence (AI) - has created much hype with the innovation of generative programs such as ChatGPT. These programs expand both the range and quality of services that can be offered by a couple and family therapist. The opportunities offered by AI for providing psychotherapy, however, do not come without controversy. Challenges with securing personal health information and the way in which these programs are constructed can compromise confidentiality, manipulate information, and may have effects that we cannot yet predict. In this workshop, participants will learn the difference between AI used in therapy and telebehavioral health. We will review the ethical dilemmas and legal issues when considering the use of AI therapy. Finally, we will review competencies applicable to AI therapies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to identify differences between telebehavioral health and AI
  • Attendees will be able to list when to use AI
  • Attendees will be able to list ethical and legal considerations for using AI
  • Attendees will be able to list the telebehavioral health competencies that apply to AI

Neurodiversity and Late Diagnosis of ADHD and ASD
(1.5 CE hrs)

Course Description:
What image comes to your mind when you picture a 17-year-old or 32-year-old on the autism spectrum and/or who has ADHD? Does that picture you imagined change with the gender of the person? Or their IQ level? This presentation goes beyond the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to describe how each brain style may look different depending on the characteristics of the person you are working with. You will learn the common (and often missed) features of these brain styles that surface among individuals who were assigned female at birth (AFABs) and among those who are both intellectually gifted and neurodivergent (i.e., twice-exceptional individuals).

Using a strengths-based approach, Dr. Blied will explain how these individuals' diagnoses may get missed in childhood, how you can begin to identify them in your therapy practice, and how you can support them in seeking formal evaluation.

Learning Objectives:
The presentation will provide an overview of:

  • Participants will be able to understand the DSM-5 criteria for ASD and ADHD. Describe the features and characteristics of ASD and ADHD and their overlap.
  • Participants will be able to explain why individuals assigned female at birth (AFABs), and twice-exceptional individuals might get missed in early childhood.
  • Develop actionable strategies that are inclusive across cultural and ethnic-centered messaging.
  • Participants will be able to identify 1-2 general strategies clients can use to manage the challenges of ASD and/or ADHD in daily life.

Couples Whisperer
(1.5 CE hrs)
(1.5 CE hrs)

Course Description:
Working with couples can be daunting and frightening. It can also be rewarding -- even fun -- when you have the right skills and composure. Learn step-by-step methods for increasing competence to become a true healer and guide, not just a referee to your couples. You will learn: what to do in the first phone call, the first session, the first fight, and at the start of each session. We will also cover curve balls: trauma, addictions, raging, affairs, co-parenting, sexual incompatibility, secrets, and ambivalence. This workshop is presented by a Certified Relational Life Therapist specializing in couples.

Learning Objectives:
The presentation will provide an overview of:

  • Describe at least one fast, easy-to-learn tool to help couples communicate non-defensively.
  • Identify at least four reasons why a couple is not progressing and three sources of leverage that can help spur change.
  • Identify the two maladaptive ways couples handle an affair, and the one mindset couples must adopt to repair their relationship.
  • How to differentiate between a latent and a blatant client, and five techniques to use if they’re both blatant.
