Say You're Nervous: Supporting Clients in Communicating Sexual Concerns
(1.5 CEs)

Workshop Description

This course is designed for therapists eager to deepen their understanding and comfort when working with sex and sexuality in their practice. We will explore the intricate ways anxiety affects communication, offering a structured approach for clients to discuss their anxiety and needs with their partners. Through the integration of biopsychosocial and psychodynamic/attachment theory frameworks, we’ll examine the multifaceted impact of anxiety on sexual health. Additionally, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy techniques will enhance emotional regulation and communication skills, facilitating more direct and meaningful conversations.

We will address critical questions such as: What factors contribute to sex anxiety? How does anxiety impact the nervous system? What insights can relational-cultural theory provide about communicating anxiety? What structured methods can be used to effectively convey anxiety and needs?

This course aims to support clinicians at all levels of experience, equipping you with the knowledge and tools to foster healthier, more open communication around sexuality with your clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the difference between the linear model and the circular model of sex;
  • Explain four biopsychosocial factors of sex anxiety
  • Name three ways anxiety interferes with sexual activity
