Breaking the Silence: Understanding the Impact of Social Isolation on Mental Health Among African American Men Through Culturally Informed Practices.

Friday | May 2, 2025
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
(1.5 CEs)

Session Description:

This one-hour workshop will explore the critical relationship between social isolation and mental health among African American men through a culturally informed lens. The session will present findings from original research that employs constructivist grounded theory to uncover how historical, systemic, and cultural factors contribute to social isolation and its role as a psychosocial stressor leading to mental health disorders. Participants will learn about effective, culturally competent practices that mental health professionals can implement to address these challenges, with a focus on community-based interventions. This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced practitioners who seek to deepen their understanding of culturally sensitive care and its application in reducing isolation and improving mental wellness in African American men.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze the impact of social isolation on the mental health of African American men, incorporating historical and systemic factors.
  2. Identify at least three culturally informed practices that can mitigate the negative effects of social isolation on mental health in this population.
  3. Describe at least three strategies for implementing community-based interventions that address social isolation among African American men.
  4. Evaluate at least two culturally competent care approaches in improving mental health outcomes for African American men.
