Greetings CAMFT members! I hope all of you are staying healthy and taking care of yourselves. There is so much going on in the world that I need to pack two messages into one this month.
My first message revolves around the theme of leadership. CAMFT is looking for members to serve as leaders, both on the CAMFT Board of Directors and on various committees.
Getting involved in CAMFT leadership is a great way to meet and collaborate with colleagues while giving back to the MFT community. For more information and to apply for one of these leadership positions, click here. The deadline for Board of Director applications is April 30, 2021, and the deadline for Committee applications is April 19, 2021.
My second message concerns racial justice and the discrimination that Asian Americans are experiencing. The group Stop AAPI Hate found nearly 3,800 incidents of anti-Asian American discrimination across the country in the past year. A surge of violence against Asian American elderly has been reported in San Francisco. Then on March 16, a gunman killed eight people at three Asian-owned businesses in Atlanta, including six Asian American women. These events, and the social dynamics of racism and racial injustice, deeply impact mental health and well-being for Asian Americans, BIPOC, and all people.
As a commitment to providing members with high quality and timely education, CAMFT will be offering a Lunch and Learn workshop on April 8, 2021, on “Asian American Resilience: Therapist Efficacy in a Time of Crisis.” This presentation will be conducted by Helen Hsu, PsyD, Past President of the Asian American Psychological Association and a staff psychologist at Stanford University. This workshop will review the diversity of the Asian American population, the history of discrimination against Asian Americans, and strategies for supporting Asian American clients.
I encourage each of you to attend this very important workshop, as well as consider volunteering for CAMFT in a leadership position.
Wishing everyone health and wellness!
