CAMFT and other advocacy groups had been working on a 2020 bill that would ‘fix’ the mandate of AB5 and allow professionals, including MFTs, to have greater flexibility in working as independent contractors. Unfortunately, the strongest of the bills, SB 900, will not be moving forward due to unsurmountable opposition. Only two of the original 30 bills (AB 1850 and AB 2257) attempting to fix AB 5, remain. These bills are both complicated, having large and influential groups on both sides of the problem, and they do not include a direct fix for MFTs currently. CAMFT continues to advocate with both the Democratic and Republican caucuses to address this critical issue.
