The purpose of this section is to present resources for enhancing skills in crisis response and disaster mental health. Theses references emphasize in-person training with practice applying intervention methods.
The American Red Cross provides free Disaster Training for all volunteers. Trainings are both on-line and in-person depending on the course. Go to STEP 4 – American Red Cross.
American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AATSS) collaborates with the National Center for Crisis Management to increase awareness of effects of traumatic events and crisis situations on human functioning, enable professionals to look beyond physical and safety needs and also address emergent psychological needs, improve the quality of support and intervention, establish meaningful standards among professionals across disciplines, provide information and training, and to assist victims become survivors and then thrivers.
Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists (ATSS) organizes, educates and professionally certifies its worldwide membership in order to assist those affected by trauma. ATSS provides and promotes opportunities for training and education in the field of traumatic stress, and professionally recognizes evidence of service, education and experience by those individuals engaged in trauma treatment, services and response.
International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. (ICISF) offers Regional Trainings throughout the United States, a World Congress on Stress, Trauma, and Coping every other year and lists local trainings by ICISF Approved Instructors.
Green Cross Academy of Traumatology (GCAT) is an international, humanitarian assistance organization, non-profit corporation comprised of trained traumatologists and compassion fatigue service providers. Most are licensed mental health professionals; all are oriented to helping people in crisis following traumatic events.
National Center for Crisis Management and the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress collaborate with the Traumatology Institute and the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology to offer education, training and certification in Crisis Management and Traumatic Stress Specialties.
National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) offers a variety of training opportunities for victim assistance professionals and crisis responders at all levels. The skill-based trainings include on-line course and in-person trainings designed to accommodate individuals and groups around the world.
