Dear Members,
Happy summer! As I travel back from the June Board of Directors meeting, I am pleased to report that we have made great progress in advancing our strategic priorities. I eagerly anticipate continuing this momentum with renewed vigor this year as we continue working with our newest Board members!
I am also excited to share some good news. Last month, the BBS voted to move toward accepting the national exam for licensure in California. This initiative was put forth as part of our 2024-2025 strategic plan. License Portability for California MFTs is an important pathway that makes it easier for our members to practice across state lines. To be clear, this is the first step of many for the potential transition to adopting the national exam in California. We are proud to be a trusted voice by the BBS and AMFTRB as they navigate the many considerations; including evaluating what a transition might look like. This process will take time, addressing the myriad of questions for future licensees, to ensure a thoughtful and inclusive transition. We’ve only crossed the first threshold of consideration. There will be many additional steps before any transition to the national exam is adopted or implemented. Rest assured, we are committed to providing you with information and support at every step along the way.
We know that you have a lot of questions, so we created two resources, a License Portability FAQ webpage and an MFT National Exam FAQ webpage, to help dispel some common misconceptions. We’ll be updating these pages regularly, so bookmark them!
I hope the summer season is bringing you a sense of warmth and renewed energy. New, exciting things are on the horizon! As always it is you, our members, who motivate staff and the Board to continue to advocate for a favorable environment for MFTs.
With care, Joy Alafia, MBA, CAE Executive Director

BOARD OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES (BBS) TAKES ACTION ON THE MFT NATIONAL CLINICAL EXAM
On May 17, 2024, the BBS Board voted to move towards accepting the Association of Marital and Family Therapists Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) national exam for licensure in California. The motion directs BBS staff to begin drafting legislative or regulatory language to accept the AMFTRB national exam among other actions to ensure adequate access, quality, and fair testing for California candidates.
CAMFT will continue to work closely with BBS staff and the AMFTRB on next steps to adopt the AMFTRB national exam so that California-licensed MFTs have better license portability and fewer hurdles to obtain federal employment.
To learn more about license portability and the national exam, please read both CAMFT’s FAQ on License Portability and our FAQ on the MFT National Exam.

PAC OPT-OUT
We are excited to share with you that as of May 31st, CAMFT will be rolling out our new PAC initiative. To align with similar associations procedures in California, this consists of automatically including a voluntary $4.00 state PAC donation to your annual membership when paying your dues. As we value transparency and respect your individual preferences regarding where your finances are allocated, you can opt out of this PAC donation when paying your dues. You can also choose a higher donation amount if you want to further support the federal and/or state CAMFT PAC (the average donation is about $25). Your involvement is critical to the success of our association’s advocacy efforts, and any donations you may make will be greatly appreciated for our advocacy program’s success. To learn more about the CAMFT PAC and to see our FAQ please click here. If you haven’t donated before and would like to, please click here.
