I am excited to share some fantastic updates with you this month. First, I am pleased to announce the completion of our board appointment process. On July 26, the Board of Directors met and appointed Nancy Brison-Moll, PhD, LMFT as our newest Clinical Director-at-Large. With this new addition, we now have a full board dedicated to serving you! I am also excited to share details for the Fall Symposium. Please join us at the San Jose Marriott on November 1st for a full day of informative workshops and valuable networking opportunities. Be sure to take advantage of our advanced pricing, available until September 1st, and secure your tickets early! CAMFT would love your input on a few important surveys this month. We sent out a demographic survey in the last week of July to help understand who you are and how we can best serve you. We’ve already gotten 1,500 responses and counting - please add your perspective to the tally! Thank you all for helping us. Keep up-to-date on trends Keep your eyes peeled for the strategic planning survey next - a chance to let us know what you want CAMFT to focus on and prioritize for the betterment of you, our CAMFT members, and for the MFT profession.

PROP 1 FUNDING BEGINS: BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ENTITIES MAY SOON REQUEST GRANTS
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has announced the release of its Bond Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) Round 1: Launch Ready Grant Request for Applications (RFA).
Through this RFA, DHCS will award up to $3.3 billion statewide for the purpose of building local behavioral health outpatient treatment slots, beds (residential/inpatient), and/or community campuses that fill a gap in the local or regional behavioral health continuum of care. The Bond BHCIP Round 1 Application Portal will open on August 9, 2024.
Eligible applicants for bond grants include counties, cities, tribal entities (including 638s and urban clinics), nonprofit organizations, and for-profit organizations whose projects reflect the state’s priorities and serve the targeted population. INTRODUCING A NEW BILL TO EXPAND MFT ROLES IN THE VA
Rep. Julia Brownley has introduced HR 8165, a bill to increase the number of qualified Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The VA Marriage and Family Therapist Equity Act in HR 8165 aims to remove barriers for California MFTs working in the VA system by easing accreditation requirements and providing clearer career paths.
Please urge your elected officials to co-sponsor this crucial legislation. You may act now by filling out our call to action form to support this bill's progress through Congress.

CMS AND NORIDIAN MEDICARE CONFERENCE AND TRAININGS
On August 7-8, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will host the 2024 Virtual National Provider Compliance Conference from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PT. During the conference, Medicare Administrative Contractors and program integrity experts will share the information and tools providers need to efficiently and effectively submit Medicare Part B claims. A combination of learning opportunities will be available, including individual presentations, question-and-answer segments, and panel discussions. Learn about the conference and register here.
On August 14, California’s MAC, Noridian Health Solutions, is holding a Telehealth Enrollment Basics webinar from 11 a.m. to noon PT. This webinar is intended to serve Medicare Part B providers who are preparing to render telehealth services. During the webinar, you'll learn about telehealth definitions and regulations, how to propose changes to CMS, best reporting practices for locations, and enrollment application tips. Have you ever wanted to present at a conference? We are seeking workshop proposals from mental health professionals who have special insight into the newest wave of therapeutic approaches, technology, and practice development, and more.
If you are enthusiastic about sharing your vision, we invite you to submit a proposal to present at the Annual Conference in May 2025, or the Fall Symposium in October 2025.
Peer presenters will be promoted on the event webpage and receive complimentary registration to the event. All travel and lodging expenses are the responsibility of the presenter.

REGISTER FOR THE SEPTEMBER 20TH WEBINAR – WORKING WITH SUICIDAL AND DANGEROUS PATIENTS

The workshop will discuss key issues involved when working with suicidal clients, including: The incidence of suicide, statistical and demographic data, avoiding liability, standards of care; identifying risk factors for suicide and undertaking reasonable protective actions, the “Zero Suicide Model,” relevant exceptions to confidentiality, relevant ethical standards and issues involving documentation.
The workshop will discuss key issues involved when working with dangerous clients, including: Standards of care, the “duty to protect” based upon Tarasoff v. Regents of Univ. of Calif., (1976) and Civil Code §43.92, the meaning of “patient communication” based upon Ewing v. Goldstein, Ph.D. (2004) and Ewing v. Northridge Hospital Center, (2004), the “duty to report,” based upon Welfare and Institutions Code §8100(b)(1) and §8105(c), and relevant exceptions to confidentiality.

Don’t forget that the BBS requires supervisors to complete a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing professional development in supervision during each renewal period.
*Reminder: Supervisors may apply their CAMFT supervisor course training hours to their overall CE requirements with one exception. A course taken on law and ethics designed specifically to meet supervisor training requirements CANNOT also be accepted toward meeting the six-hour law and ethics course required of all licensees each renewal period. A single course will not fulfill both requirements.

The Fall Symposium will be held on Friday, November 1st in San Jose, and we want to see you there! Attendees will have the opportunity to earn six CEs with two workshops in Law & Ethics. New Year, New Laws: What You Need to Know to Thrive in 2025 presented by CAMFT staff Attorney Bradley Muldrow, JD will break down key new laws in 2025. CAMFT staff attorney, Kristin Roscoe, JD will cover BBS complaints and the disciplinary process in her workshop, Untangling the Errors of Others.
This full day symposium includes the workshops, networking lunch, access to three audio recordings from the Annual Conference for an additional six CEs and a rush hour reception. Rates for Clinical members start at $249. Register by September 1 for special advance pricing!
MFT CLINICAL EXAM QUESTIONS REDUCED TO 150
Beginning September 1, 2024, the number of MFT Clinical Exam questions will be reduced from 170 total questions to 150. Currently, 150 questions are scored, and 20 are non-scored. As of September 1st, 125 items will be scored, and 25 unscored. The examination time allotted will remain four hours. For more information on the MFT Clinical Exam, click here.
TRANSITIONING TO THE NATIONAL CLINICAL EXAM
In May, the BBS Board voted to move towards accepting the Association of Marital and Family Therapists Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) National MFT Clinical Exam for licensure in California. This is a significant first step forward for California-licensed MFTs to have better license portability and fewer hurdles to obtain federal employment.
